St John’s Chambers - Manchester

The Brief
A regeneration project of a beautiful barristers’ chamber in the centre of Manchester resulted in the specification of solid walnut flooring throughout the building and down two flights of stairs. Naturally Parallel’s solid Woodline profiles were the perfect compliment for the flooring areas in need of expansion or transition, however the staircase proved more complicated than originally anticipated. The original marble staircases were still present, but with 200 years of wear, a deep groove had been worn down the centre of each step. Consequently the standard Woodline Stairnosing was not wide/deep enough to provide sufficient support across the step. The logical answer was to manufacture a bespoke Stairnosing from solid walnut, which was wide enough to provide the structural properties needed.

The end product was a tongue and grooved FWN4 nosing section, 160mm wide with a complementary anti-slip insert. The groove was positioned to marry up perfectly with the flooring plank, enabling fitting to be done in seconds and providing a flush finish across the top. The anti-slip insert provided all the properties required to satisfy building regulations in a commercial area whilst taking care not to detract from the aesthetics. The ability of Parallel to produce a bespoke product resulted in a finish of the highest quality where no alternatives were available.
